I think one of the biggest trends right now in social media is the "stories" movement.
Snapchat started the whole idea of creating a "story" with snapchat stories and it became an instant hit. SO much so that now instagram has also added an "instagram story" component to its app.
I really like this "story" trend. It really broadens these social media apps to being so much more than just connecting with friends and liking pictures. Possibilities become endless when an app allows you to create your own story.
Tell a story. I like that.

I like that it allows you to share more instant, authentic, and genuine moments of your day-to-day that you can then look back on later and smile at.
I completely understand why instagram would want to piggyback off of snapchat and add the story component to their app, but it kind of frustrates me. I think the story aspect of snapchat was so unique and fitting to snapchat that when other apps do it too it just makes snapchat less unique. All the different social media apps are going to become less and less specialized and cool if they keep stealing from each other and include all the same features.
However, as much as this bothers me, I also understand why instagram would want to integrate the story feature too! I guess all the social media apps have to keep up with the current trends and what the users are enjoying.

Another trend I have been noticing a lot more recently is livestreaming on facebook. On facebook now anyone can stream themselves live for up to 4 hours just right on their profile page. I even get notifications on my phone sometimes about my friends and it will say "so and so is now streaming live."
My older sister works at an advertising agency and this past summer they moved to a new location and had a big welcoming/anniversary party. The party was filmed and streamed live on facebook so you could watch it at home. I thought this was so interesting and bizarre. I think this is definitely an up and coming trend for social media and i'm curious to see where it goes.
