Research is extremely important.

It is an essential part to marketing through social media.

Here is why:

1. Knowing your product/company.

If you're in charge of representing a company on social media, you HAVE to know about that company. You HAVE to do the research.

Who are they?

What kind of company are they? What are their needs? What kind of marketing stuff have they tried in the past? What has worked for them? What hasn't?

You have to do the research and ask yourself these questions about the group that you are going to be representing. You want to make sure you are doing the best job for them, and in order to do that, you NEED to really and truly know them.

If someone was going to play you in a movie, you would hope they did their research on you first, right?

2. Knowing your audience.

You HAVE to know who your audience is and then do the research on that group of people. Not everything appeals to everyone. You can't please everyone. So you HAVE to understand your audience and their wants and needs in order to cater to them and make your posts based on your specific audience.

***Another important thing with social media, is knowing what specific form of social media your audience prefers. Your audience might be on twitter more frequently than facebook. You HAVE to know those things. You HAVE to research that.

3. Knowing your competition.

To start representing something through social media, you HAVE to know what's currently being done out there? What are people out there right now doing on social media that is and/or isn't working?

Specifically companies/people that are similar to who you are representing. You HAVE to check out your competition and see what they are currently doing on social media. Doing that research will teach you what is currently out there working, what you could do to make something even better, and give you a good starting place.
